Young Drivers Insurance

auto_insurance_young_driversIn addition to the standard factors used by auto insurance providers to calculate auto premiums and subsequent discounts (i.e. driving record, car type, mileage, theft prevention, etc.) the following are additional considerations applied to the young driver:

AGE Most insurance companies will consider young people to be in the high-risk category until they reach their mid-20’s.

GENDER Boys are statistically a higher insurance risk than girls.  They drive more, drive faster, engage in reckless driving more often and are issued more DUI’s than their female peers.

SCHOOL GRADES Students on the honor-roll, dean’s list or the like qualify for a “Good Student Discount.”  One major insurance provider offers up to a 15% discount for doing well in school.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING CERTIFICATES and ADVANCED DRIVING COURSES Young drivers and their parents will qualify for discounts if they participate in additional safety courses (including online courses).

CREDIT Young people will qualify for lower insurance premiums once they begin establishing (good) credit.

COMMUNITY WORK Being an active part of the community will help young drivers obtain additional discounts.

CAR SIZE Teens who drive compact or mid-size cars will pay lower premiums than those who drive sport cars or larger SUV’s.

DRIVING RECORD A consistently clean driving record is extremely important.  Some insurance companies will give reduced rates after defined intervals of driving accident and infraction-free. One major auto insurer gives teens the opportunity to earn up to 5% off their premium for every six months without an accident.  Similarly, traffic accidents will typically nullify all the discounts listed above.
