Screening Methodology
Most of the items listed
in NewBuyer’s Buying Guides receive an overall evaluation of:
Excellent
OR
Very Good
Only sites that have been carefully
screened are considered for evaluation. Sites that are most likely to be
eliminated through the screening process are those that are:
- Primarily commercial
- Based on minimal research
- Lacking sufficient content on the topic
The Overall Evaluation
Even after a site has
passed through the screening, it is not necessarily listed in a NewBuyer
Buying Guide. Only a small percentage of the sites that are evaluated are
listed. Currently, fewer than one out of fifty resources pass the screening and rating
methodology to make it into a NewBuyer buying guide.
Evaluation Criteria
The overall evaluation is
based on six criteria:
-
Objectivity -- A sales pitch
masked as information, data, advice or guidance is our primary filter.
The increasing impact of commerce on content makes it harder for
buyers to find helpful, objective information. Enter NewBuyer.
-
Relevance -- Relevance to
helping buyers answer the four key buying questions.
-
Completeness -- The more
(relevant) detail, the better.
-
Authority -- The credentials
of both the sponsoring organization and the individual authors of the
information presented.
-
Currentness -- While certain
buying information is timeless, many items need to stay current to
help buyers.
-
Ease of Use -- The
accessibility of material, ease of navigation, page layout, working
links and acceptable loading time.
Evaluation Team
The rating team is made up of a network of
researchers and contributors with training in the use of the NewBuyer
evaluation method.
Ratings Background
NewBuyer evaluates articles, web pages and
content that present substantial data or information about purchase
decisions on high-impact, emotional, and potentially life-changing
products and services.
Auto, home and baby product buyers use our
buying guides as a high-quality entry point to the Internet. These buyers
look to NewBuyer as a trusted, objective advisor for guidance while
answering key buying questions.

NewBuyer's rating system stems from these key tenets:
- Maintain a strict focus on the four key
buying questions for purchase decisions on high-impact, emotional, and
potentially life-changing products and services.
- Reference
only the highest value Internet content. Fewer than one out of fifty
resources pass the screening and rating methodology to make it into a
NewBuyer buying guide.
- Remain aggressively objective,
preventing content influence by commercial entities. NewBuyer receives
no compensation for the links and ratings that appear in the buying
guides. NewBuyer does not participate in affiliate programs or offer
paid placement of content.
- Link directly to the most useful
information (page-level linking) vs. pointing consumers to top-level
web sites (site-level linking.)
- Appear in an easy-to-use guide format.
